Biography of Anna Carolina Lagrange

Anna Carolina Lagrange was a French singer (coloratura soprano) and vocal coach. She received her education in Paris and then in Italy, studying under Marco Bordogni and Francesco Lamperti (according to other sources, she studied under Placido Mandanici). Lagrange made her debut at the age of 16 in Friedrich von Flotow's opera "La Duchesse de Guise".

International Success

She performed on all the major stages in Italy and made her debut at La Scala in 1845. In 1850, Lagrange performed the role of Fidès in the Austrian premiere of Meyerbeer's "Le Prophète" in Vienna. From 1853 to 1854, she went on a tour in St. Petersburg, predominantly performing Italian roles by Bellini, Rossini, and Donizetti. In 1855 and 1856, she toured in the United States, including performing the lead role in Luigi Arditi's opera "La Spia" and the role of Violetta in the American premiere of Verdi's "La Traviata". In 1859, Lagrange gave 13 performances in Montevideo.

Special Arias for Lagrange

Franz Erkel specifically composed an additional aria for Lagrange in 1850 for his opera "László Hunyadi", which became known as the "Aria Lagrange".

Vocal Pedagogy

Apart from her singing career, Lagrange also worked as a vocal coach and teacher. She passed down her knowledge and techniques to aspiring singers, sharing her expertise in the art of coloratura singing.
