Early Life and Education
Anni Sinnemäki was born in a family of academics, with her father, Anssi Sinnemäki, holding a master's degree in philosophy, and her mother, Aino Telkkä, a licentiate in political science. After graduating high school in 1992, Sinnemäki enrolled in the University of Helsinki, where she studied Russian literature, philosophy, and general linguistics.
Political Career
Parliamentary Member and Party LeaderIn 1999, Sinnemäki was elected to the Finnish Parliament, known as the Eduskunta, as a representative from the Helsinki electoral district. She served as the deputy chair of the Green League parliamentary group from 2001 to 2003 and as the chair from 2007 to 2009. In 2009, she became the chair of the Green League party.
Minister of Labor
In 2009, Sinnemäki was appointed Minister of Labor in the Vanhanen Cabinet. She continued in this role in the Kiviniemi Cabinet from 2010 to 2011. After the 2011 parliamentary elections, the Green League lost ground, and Sinnemäki was not chosen to join the new Cabinet led by Jyrki Katainen.
City Planning and Local Government
Deputy Mayor of HelsinkiIn 2014, Sinnemäki was elected Deputy Mayor of Helsinki for Urban Planning. She held this position until 2017, when she resigned to focus on her campaign for Mayor of Helsinki.
Mayor of Helsinki Candidate
In 2017, Sinnemäki announced her candidacy for Mayor of Helsinki. However, she was unsuccessful in her bid.
Literary and Artistic Contributions
PoetrySinnemäki is also an accomplished poet. She has published two poetry collections.
Music
While still in school, Sinnemäki met Kerkko Koskinen, who would later form the popular Finnish band Ultra Bra. Sinnemäki wrote the lyrics for many of the band's songs.
Personal Life
Sinnemäki has a daughter, Siirin, who was born in 1990. In 2012, she married Antonio Monti, an Italian man. Sinnemäki resides in Helsinki.
