Martti Karttunen, a renowned Finnish cellist, commenced his musical journey in Helsinki under the guidance of Erkki Rautio. His pursuit of knowledge led him to London, where he studied with William Pleeth, and subsequently to Amsterdam, where he received tutelage from Tibor de Machula.
Artistic Leadership and Festival Direction
Karttunen's artistic leadership extended to the role of Artistic Director of the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra from 1994 to 1998. Additionally, he held leadership positions at various Finnish music festivals, demonstrating his commitment to fostering the arts.
Principal Cellist of the London Symphony Orchestra
From 1999 to 2005, Karttunen served as the Principal Cellist of the London Symphony Orchestra, showcasing his exceptional talent and dedication to the ensemble.
