Early Life and Career

Anthony Franciosa was born in New York City in 1928 to an Italian-American family. His parents divorced shortly after his birth, and he chose his mother's maiden name as his stage surname. After working various odd jobs, Franciosa joined the Cherry Lane Theatre Company at the age of twenty.

Broadway Success and 'A Hatful of Rain'

In 1955, Franciosa won his first Tony Award for his performance in the Broadway production of "A Hatful of Rain." The play's film adaptation in 1957 earned him an Oscar nomination. Despite his critical acclaim, Franciosa later admitted that he was overwhelmed by the sudden fame it brought him.

Hollywood Stardom

Throughout the 1950s, Franciosa maintained a prolific career in Hollywood, appearing in over a dozen films. His notable roles included "The Long, Hot Summer," "Wild Is the Wind," and "The Naked Maja." His versatility extended from comedy to drama, as showcased in "Period of Adjustment" and "Assault on a Queen."

Television and Later Work

In the 1970s, Franciosa transitioned to television with lead roles in "The Greatest Show on Earth" and "The Name of the Game." He continued to appear in films throughout the 1980s and 1990s, including "Julie Darling," "Tenebre," and "City Hall."

Personal Life and Death

Franciosa married four times and had three children. His marriages included Beatrice Bakalyar, Shelley Winters, Judith Balaban, and Rita Theil, who remained his wife until his death. Franciosa died of a stroke at the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles on January 19, 2006, just a few days after the passing of his former wife, Shelley Winters.
