This event likely had a psychological impact on Wong, and he became a troubled teenager. He was not interested in studying and had difficult relationships, even with his peers, at school. At some point, Wong made a radical decision to leave school altogether and educate himself using textbooks.

Wong began his acting career with courses at Asia Television Limited (ATV), the first Hong Kong TV channel. There, he had to portray anti-heroes and "bad guys" in various TV productions. After a couple of years of studying, he participated in twenty television dramas. Gaining experience, Wong enrolled in the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and made his debut in a feature film. The exact year and film title differ among biographers, with some stating it was in 1984 with the film "An Eternal Combat" and others saying it was in 1985 with "My Name Ain't Suzie." Nevertheless, these films did not bring him fame.

However, in 1986, Wong was nominated for the Hong Kong Film Awards in the category of Best New Performer. He briefly left the film industry to focus on theater before returning as a film actor in the early 1990s. Almost immediately, Wong gained recognition, receiving an invitation from John Woo to star in the film "Hard Boiled" in 1992. In 1993, Wong won the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Supporting Actor in the film "The Untold Story."

In the mid-1990s, Wong tried his hand at directing and released two films: "New Tenant" in 1995 and "Top Banana Club" in 1996. These films were not well-received, and Wong shifted his focus back to acting. By the late 1990s, he had appeared in almost all major Hong Kong films, receiving multiple awards along the way. Wong also released four music albums. Some of his recent notable films include "The Medallion" (2003) and "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" (2008).
