Early Life and Career
Antonio Gades was born on November 14, 1936, in Elche, Alicante, Spain. His father, Esteve Rodenas, fought in the Civil War against Francisco Franco. Gades began his career as a dancer in the troupe of Pilar López, becoming a soloist at the age of 15. He adopted the pseudonym "Gades" as his stage name.
Professional Success
In 1961, Gades established his own company, staging productions based on the works of Spanish authors such as Federico García Lorca. In 1978, he was appointed director of the National Ballet of Spain, where he introduced new artists and choreographers. However, after conflicts with the Ministry of Culture, he resigned three years later.
Personal Life
Gades was married four times and had five children. He was a supporter of Catalan independence and a member of the Central Committee of the orthodox Communist Party of the Peoples of Spain.
Later Years and Legacy
In 2004, Gades passed away from cancer in Madrid. His contributions to flamenco dance left a lasting legacy. He was known for his innovative choreography and ability to reinterpret traditional forms. Gades also had a successful film career, starring in several critically acclaimed films by director Carlos Saura.
