Early Life and Musical Roots
Arca, born Alejandra Ghersi, hails from Caracas, Venezuela, where she spent her formative years in an affluent family. Her father worked as an investment banker, while her mother was an International Studies professor.
At the tender age of three, Ghersi's family relocated to Darien, Connecticut, but six years later, they returned to Venezuela, where she received a private education and studied piano diligently for several years.
At 13, Ghersi abandoned piano lessons to pursue her own musical aspirations. She familiarized herself with the FL Studio software and began honing her songwriting skills. During her teenage years, she wrote music under the pseudonym Nuuro, garnering admiration from Venezuelan artists such as Los Amigos Invisibles.
New York and Artistic Flourishing
At 17, Ghersi moved to New York City to attend the Tisch School of the Arts. The bustling city provided the perfect environment for her to refine her unique musical style.
Musical Career
Breakthrough and RecognitionFebruary 1, 2012, marked the release of Arca's debut EP, "Barón Libre." Following its success, she dropped two more EPs that year: "Stretch 1" on April 19 and "Stretch 2" on August 6.
Arca made a significant contribution to Kanye West's 2013 album "Yeezus," serving as producer and co-writer on five tracks. On July 23, she unveiled her mixtape "&&&&&&&&&&" on SoundCloud, which was met with critical acclaim. Moreover, Arca produced and co-wrote every song on FKA twigs' EP2, released on September 17.
Debut Album and Collaborations
November 4, 2014, witnessed the release of Arca's debut studio album, "Xen," via Mute Records. A special edition, "Xen ????? Edition," featured two additional tracks, "????? A" and "????? B." On January 20, 2015, Björk's album "Vulnicura" dropped, showcasing Arca's production credits on seven tracks and co-writing contributions on two.
Subsequent Albums and Acclaim
Arca's second studio album, "Mutant," was released on November 20, 2015. Her third studio album, self-titled "Arca," followed on April 7, 2017, through XL Recordings.
In February 2020, Arca released the hour-long single "@@@@@." Four months later, her fourth studio album, "KiCk i," dropped under XL Recordings, featuring the singles "Nonbinary," "Time," "KLK" (with Rosalía), and "Mequetrefe." The album received mostly positive reviews, praised for its accessibility in comparison to her earlier experimental works.
Recent Releases and Experiments
Arca continued to push musical boundaries with the release of her remix album "Riquiquì;Bronze-Instances (1-100)" in December 2020. In 2021, she debuted the four-track EP "Madre."
Later that year, she released a series of follow-up albums to "KiCk i": "KICK ii," "KicK iii," "kick iiii," and "kiCK iiiii," spanning from November 30 to December 3, 2021.
Personal Life and Identity
Throughout her teenage years, Ghersi struggled with her sexuality, denying her homosexual inclinations. However, in 2018, she publicly came out as non-binary, later specifying that she identifies as a trans woman and prefers the pronouns she/her or they/them.
