Early Life and Education
Metropolitan Ambrose was born on September 20, 1943, in the village of Zalyvanshchyna, Ukraine. After graduating high school, he worked in Odessa until 1967, when he entered the Odessa Theological Seminary. In 1970, he began studying at the Moscow Theological Academy, graduating in 1974 with a candidate degree in theology.
Ordination and Service
On October 8, 1972, Patriarch Pimen of Moscow ordained him as a deacon. In 1973, he was ordained a priest. He served in the Kharkiv Cathedral of the Annunciation and as a dean in the Kharkiv diocese, where he was widowed in 1987 after his wife and son died in a car accident.
Ministerial Roles
In 1989, Metropolitan Ambrose began teaching Sunday school at the Cathedral of the Annunciation. In 1990, he was elected to the Kharkiv City Council. He restored the Holy Trinity Church in Kharkiv and became its rector. He also taught the Old Testament at the Kharkiv Theological Seminary.
Monastic Life and Episcopal Ordination
In 1997, he became rector of the Holy Peter and Paul Church in Kharkiv. In 1998, the Holy Synod elected him Bishop of Novgorod-Seversky, a vicar of the Chernihiv diocese. On June 26, 1998, he was tonsured a monk with the name Ambrose. The next day, he was elevated to archimandrite and ordained a bishop.
Bishop of Chernihiv and Novgorod-Seversky
After the death of Metropolitan Anthony in 2003, Metropolitan Ambrose became acting head of the Chernihiv diocese, and later its ruling bishop. In 2007, he was given the title Bishop of Chernihiv and Novgorod-Seversky.
Later Years
In 2007, he was appointed Rector of the Chernihiv Theological Seminary. In 2008, he was elevated to the rank of archbishop. Metropolitan Ambrose continues to serve as head of the Chernihiv diocese, guiding the spiritual life of the region.
