Biography of Archie Moore

Archie Moore was an American boxer, known as the world champion in the light heavyweight category from 1952 to 1960. He made his professional debut on September 3, 1935, in a fight against Billy Sims. Moore won the title of light heavyweight champion at the age of 36 by defeating Joy Maxim in a decision by the judges. This made Archie the oldest holder of this trophy.

Clash with Rocky Marciano

On September 21, 1955, a title fight took place between Moore and Rocky Marciano. The fight ended with Rocky winning by knockout in the ninth round. Soon after this defeat, Moore quickly regained his form and started winning one knockout victory after another. On June 5, 1956, he knocked out Yolande Pompey in the tenth round, thus regaining his championship title.

Transition to Heavyweight

Later, Moore moved from the light heavyweight category to the heavyweight category, leaving his championship title behind. In this new category, Archie attempted to challenge Floyd Patterson for the championship, but after suffering a defeat, he decided to return to the light heavyweight division.

Battle with Muhammad Ali

On November 15, 1962, Archie Moore faced Muhammad Ali. The age difference was evident, making it difficult for Moore to withstand the future legend of boxing. Ali knocked Moore down three times, and the referee decided to stop the fight, awarding a technical victory to Muhammad.

Retirement and Legacy

Archie Moore's farewell fight took place on March 15, 1963. In this bout, Moore faced a young Mike DiBiase. The more experienced Archie knocked out his opponent in the third round, thus ending his career.

Archie Moore had a remarkable boxing career that spanned over 50 years. He was known as the "Old Mongoose" for his vast experience and respectable age by boxing standards. Even at the age of 47 and a half, in 1961, he was still defending the light heavyweight championship title. By the end of 1962, Moore was ranked among the top ten heavyweight boxers in the world.

After retiring from active boxing, Archie Moore worked as a trainer for the great Muhammad Ali, and later for world champion George Foreman. He had two children, Archie Moore and Marry Moore, with his first wife Elizabeth Thornton. With his second wife Joan Hardy, Moore had six children: Billy Ray, Reena Marie, Joanna Marie, Hardy Lee, D'Angelo Greg, and Anthony Cleveland.

Archie Moore passed away from a heart attack in 1998, just four days before his eighty-fifth birthday. He was cremated and buried in the mausoleum-crematorium in San Diego.
