Arik Einstein: The Icon of Israeli Music
Arik Einstein was an Israeli singer, songwriter, and musician. Despite the lack of formal musical education, Einstein was one of the most prominent figures in Israeli popular music. His songs were even referred to by the country's Prime Minister, Bibi Netanyahu, as the "soundtrack of Israel."
Early Life and Career
Arik Einstein, born Arieh 'Arik' Einstein, in 1939, in Tel Aviv, Israel. His father, Yaakov Einstein, was an actor at the Ohel Theater. In his childhood, Arik showed promise as an athlete, excelling in high jump and shot put. During his military service, Arik began singing in the army band, 'Nahal Brigade.' He later performed at the renowned Habima Theater. In 1963, he married Alona Shochat, but their marriage ended in 1968.
Rise to Fame
Arik released his first solo album in 1960, which featured only four songs. However, it wasn't until 1964 when he joined the highly popular group 'Yarkon Bridge Trio' that his career took off. Although Arik was more inclined towards rock music, he gained fame for his chanson-style songs, earning him the nickname 'Israeli Bernes' and 'Israeli Sinatra.' Throughout his extensive career, Arik released over 40 albums and wrote several books of songs.
Legacy and Death
Arik Einstein's songs touched the hearts of multiple generations of Israelis. When he passed away on November 26, 2013, the entire nation mourned his loss. At the age of 74, Arik died from a heart attack. His funeral, held on November 27, was attended by thousands of people, leading to the closure of several major streets in Tel Aviv. The Israeli government expressed condolences, with Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu calling Einstein's songs the "soundtrack of Israel."
Arik left behind over a thousand songs, many of which became beloved Israeli classics and were performed at various competitions. For more than forty years, Arik Einstein remained an iconic figure in Israeli popular music, with his songs cherished by families across the nation. He spent his entire life in Tel Aviv, a city he deeply loved. Arik was laid to rest at the Trumpeldor Cemetery in Tel Aviv. In 2005, he was ranked 22nd in the list of the Greatest Israelis by the Ynet network.
