Armi Kuusela was born on August 30, 1934, in Muhos, Finland. Her parents, Aarne Kuusela and Martta Kyrö, met and got married in Ontario, Canada, where their first child was born. They later returned to Finland and settled in Muhos, where Armi became the fourth daughter in the family.
Armi Kuusela attended school in Muhos and in 1951, she began studying at a women's college in Porvoo. She was an avid athlete in her youth and enjoyed swimming, skiing, and gymnastics. After successfully completing her exams, she planned to attend the gymnasium at the University of Helsinki.
In May 1952, at the age of 17, Kuusela won the traditional Finnish beauty pageant "Suomen Neito" and received a prize that included a box of chocolates, a gold bracelet, and a ticket to America and back from sponsor Pan American Airways. On June 17, Armi flew to Long Beach, California, to participate in the first-ever Miss Universe pageant among thirty other contestants. The competition took place on June 29, 1952, and Armi was crowned the first-ever Miss Universe. At the time, she had a height of 165 cm and weighed 49 kg.
Immediately following her victory, a film titled "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" was made about Armi, in which she portrayed herself and starred alongside actor Tauno Palo. On February 22, 1953, Kuusela embarked on a world tour where she met Filipino businessman Virgilio Hilario. They got married on May 4, 1953, in Tokyo. Armi chose to give up her crown less than a year after winning the pageant to prioritize her wedding, as her courtship with Hilario had been swift.
Armi and Virgilio spent their honeymoon in the Hawaiian Islands, visited the United States and Europe, and eventually settled in the Philippines. They had five children together, who now live in different parts of the world, including Chile, Spain, Canada, the United States, and the Philippines. For a time, Kuusela managed a residential complex in Manila, where she lived with Hilario before moving to the gated community of Forbes Park, also known as "Millionaires' Row." She also appeared in a film in the Philippines.
In September 1975, Virgilio Hilario passed away from a heart attack, leaving 41-year-old Armi widowed. She remarried American diplomat Albert Williams on June 8, 1978. They initially lived in Barcelona and later resided in Izmir, Turkey, before settling in La Jolla, a neighborhood in San Diego, California, where they still live to this day.
Armi actively engages in community affairs, participates in charitable work, and supports cancer research at the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute.
