From Vision to Gallery Empire

Born on March 12, 1938, in Duluth, Minnesota, Glimcher graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and Boston University. In 1960, he founded "The Pace Gallery," which relocated to New York City in 1963. Today, the gallery operates four locations in New York City and one in Beijing, showcasing works by renowned artists such as Chuck Close, Tara Donovan, David Hockney, Maya Lin, and Kiki Smith. Glimcher also curates personal collections and works by Pablo Picasso, Agnes Martin, Alexander Calder, and Ed Reinhardt.

A Cinematic Journey

Glimcher's foray into cinema began with a small acting role in Robert Benton's "Still of the Night" (1982). He later became an associate producer on Ivan Reitman's "Legal Eagles" in 1986. In 1988, he produced the biopic "Gorillas in the Mist," starring Sigourney Weaver, and the drama "The Good Mother."

Directorial Debut with "The Mambo Kings"

Glimcher made his directorial debut with the musical drama "The Mambo Kings" (1992), based on the novel by Oscar Hijuelos. The film garnered critical acclaim, earning Glimcher an Academy Award nomination for "Best Original Song." The song, "Beautiful Maria of My Soul," also received a Golden Globe nomination.

Continued Cinematic Ventures

Glimcher produced the 1995 thriller "Just Cause," starring Sean Connery and Laurence Fishburne. He returned to directing with the 1999 comedy "The White River Kid," featuring Antonio Banderas.

Exploring the Canvas of Cinema

In 2008, Glimcher released the documentary "Picasso and Braque Go to the Movies," distributed by Arthouse Film. The film brought together contemporary artists, intellectuals, and curators to explore the relationship between cinema and the visual arts.
