Biography of Art Davis

Art Davis, a jazz musician, was born on December 5, 1934, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. After completing his education at Manhattan School of Music and Juilliard School of Music, Davis, believing that playing the double bass would not allow him to make a living, became a licensed psychologist. For several years, he combined his work as a practicing psychologist with performances, but then made the choice in favor of music. In the 1950s and 1960s, Art Davis performed and recorded albums with almost all significant jazz musicians of that time. In particular, he collaborated with Max Roach, Duke Ellington, Clark Terry, Bob Brookmeyer, Ahmad Jamal, and Quincy Jones. From 1959 to 1961, he played in Dizzy Gillespie's big band. From 1961 to 1965, Davis worked together with John Coltrane. In the early 1970s, Art Davis left the jazz scene and pursued academic music, playing in symphony orchestras. By the beginning of the 1980s, the renowned bassist decided to retire from his music career, focusing on teaching, fighting against racial segregation in the American music community, and obtaining a doctoral degree in psychology. However, in 1982, he returned to the stage and continued to perform until his death.
