Life and Career of American Pianist

Early Life and Education

American pianist Maurice Balsem was born to Maurice Balsem and Eli Poznanska. He began his musical studies in Łódź, Poland, where he gave his first concert at the age of 12.

Immigration to the United States

In 1940, the young pianist emigrated to New York City. He established himself primarily as a chamber musician and accompanist, collaborating with renowned performers such as Nathan Milstein, Yehudi Menuhin, Zino Francescatti, and Joseph Szigeti.

Collaborations and Ensemble Performances

Balsem became a frequent guest artist with the Budapest String Quartet, expanding their ensemble into a piano quintet. He also performed alongside individual members of the quartet.

Teaching and Pedagogy

Alongside his performing career, Maurice Balsem dedicated himself to teaching. He served as a faculty member at Boston University and the Manhattan School of Music, where he imparted his knowledge and experience to generations of aspiring musicians.
