Biography of Artur Jorge
Artur Jorge Braga Melo Teixeira, known as Artur Jorge, is a former Portuguese football player and coach. He was born on February 13, 1946, in Porto, Portugal. He gained fame primarily for leading FC Porto to victory in the UEFA Champions League in 1987.
Playing Career
Artur Jorge began his playing career in 1965 at Academica Coimbra. He then moved to Benfica in 1970, where he played as a forward alongside the legendary Eusebio. During his time at Benfica, Artur Jorge became a two-time top scorer in the Portuguese league. He later played for Belenenses from 1975 to 1978.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Artur Jorge embarked on a successful coaching career. He started as the coach of Belenenses in 1979 and then went on to manage clubs like Gimarães, Portimonense, and Porto in Portugal. In 1994, he won the French league title with Paris Saint-Germain. He also had coaching stints with the Swiss national team and Academica Coimbra.
Achievements
Artur Jorge's most notable achievement as a coach was leading FC Porto to victory in the 1987 UEFA Champions League. He also won the Portuguese league title three times with Porto and once with Benfica. In addition, he was named the best football player in Portugal in 1967 and was a two-time top scorer in the Portuguese league.
Personal Life
Aside from his passion for football, Artur Jorge also had a love for literature. He studied German literature at the University of Lisbon and even wrote poetry in his free time. However, his coaching career took precedence, and he did not pursue a career in philology.
