Childhood and Early Life

Ashley Cummings was born on November 11, 1992, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to Australian parents working in the medical field. Her younger sister, Hannah, was born shortly after. They spent their early years in Jeddah and later moved to Riyadh. Their nanny, a Filipina woman named Marivic, had a profound influence on their childhood. She encouraged their love of singing and even organized secret karaoke nights for the family.

In addition to singing, Ashley developed a passion for dance at a young age and began taking ballet lessons at the age of two. She eventually increased her training to 30 hours per week, aspiring to become a professional ballerina. However, after the September 11 attacks in the United States, many foreigners left Saudi Arabia, including the Cummings family. They told their daughters they were going on an extended vacation.

Education and Career Crossroads

The family spent the next three years traveling before settling back in Australia in 2004. Despite growing up in the East, Ashley had little exposure to Western culture and never attended school outside of Australia. At the age of 14, she felt the need for a change and ran away to New York City. There, she met an actress and became fascinated with the profession.

Upon returning to Australia, Ashley enrolled in the Brent Street School of Performing Arts, where she studied dance and acting. However, she was forced to give up dance due to health concerns. She also attended Screenwise Film & TV and later studied philosophy at university.

Film and Television Career

Cummings began her acting career in films and television at the age of 15. Her extensive travel and exposure to different cultures enabled her to easily connect with her fellow actors, empathize with their perspectives, and effortlessly embody a wide range of characters.

In 2009, she landed a pivotal role in the action film "Tomorrow, When the War Began," which earned her an AACTA Award nomination. She went on to star in the coming-of-age series "Puberty Blues" (2012), which explored teenage sexuality and drug use. The role introduced her to the experiences of Western adolescents and prompted her to learn how to surf.

Following her work on "Puberty Blues," Cummings starred in the psychological thriller "Hounds of Love" (2016), receiving the FEDEORA Award at the Venice International Film Festival for her performance.

In 2017, she played a supporting role in the drama "The Goldfinch," alongside an ensemble cast that included Sarah Paulson, Nicole Kidman, Luke Wilson, and Finn Wolfhard. She also starred in the horror series "NOS4A2," an adaptation of Joe Hill's novel.

Career Advancement and Recognition

In 2016, Cummings was awarded the Heath Ledger Scholarship by Australians in Film. The scholarship included $10,000, a two-year scholarship to an acting academy in Los Angeles, and a week-long trip to California. She also attended masterclasses taught by renowned educators and dialect coaches and met with Hollywood casting agents.

Recent Projects and Personal Life

In 2023, Cummings starred as Abby Conroy in the science fiction series "Citadel." She is currently involved in a relationship with actor Aaron Jakubenko, and they often share pictures of themselves on social media.
