Armenian-Lithuanian opera soprano Asmik Grigorian has captivated audiences worldwide with her exceptional voice and dramatic presence.
Early Life and Education
Born in 1974, Grigorian began her musical journey at the M. K. Čiurlionis National School of Arts in Vilnius, graduating in 1999. She continued her studies at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, earning a Master's degree in music in 2006.
Debut and Early Career in Lithuania
Grigorian made her operatic debut in Lithuania, performing in national productions. She soon gained recognition and became a regular performer at the Latvian National Opera and the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. In 2005 and 2010, Grigorian was awarded the Golden Stage Cross, Lithuania's highest theater award, for her performances.
International Acclaim
From 2011, Grigorian's career soared on the international stage. She garnered attention for her compelling portrayals of Tchaikovsky's heroines, including Nastasya in "The Enchantress" at the Theater an der Wien and Tatiana in "Eugene Onegin" at the Komische Oper Berlin. In 2016, Grigorian was honored with the International Opera Award for Best Newcomer ("Young Singer") at the London ceremony.
Opera Debut at the Royal Swedish Opera
Grigorian made her debut at the Royal Swedish Opera in December 2016 as Fedora in Umberto Giordano's eponymous opera. Her performance drew critical acclaim, with reviewers praising her "vibrant, wide-ranging voice."
Debut at the Salzburg Festival
In August 2017, Grigorian performed the role of Marie in Alban Berg's "Wozzeck" at the Salzburg Festival. Her interpretation was hailed as "superb musicianship with deep understanding of the Bergian vocal style."
Upcoming Performances
Grigorian will debut at the Edinburgh International Festival in August 2019, when the Komische Oper Berlin brings its production of Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin" to Edinburgh.
Personal Life
Asmik Grigorian comes from a family of musicians. Her father was the Armenian tenor Gegam Grigorian, and her mother is the Lithuanian soprano Irena Milkevičiūtė. Grigorian has been married twice: to the opera singer Gedrius Žalys (2000-2007) and to the Russian theater director Vasily Barkhatov (2015-present). She has two children, a son and a daughter.
