Early Life and Football Career in Syria

Assaf KHALIFEH was born as the sixth child in a family of nine siblings in Syria. At a young age, he developed a passion for football and joined the youth team of his hometown club. In 1991, he represented Syria's youth national team at the FIFA World Youth Championship in Portugal.

KHALIFEH's impressive performance on the field caught the attention of senior officials, leading to his inclusion in the Syrian national team. He became a prolific scorer for his country and was consistently ranked among the top three goal-getters in the Syrian League, even claiming the Golden Boot award in the 1992/93 season.

Move to Russia and Return to Syria

In 1994, the Russian club FC Zhemchuzhina visited Damascus for a friendly match against the Syrian national team. KHALIFEH's exceptional skills caught the eye of the Zhemchuzhina management, and he was offered a two-year contract. His debut occurred on April 2nd against Lokomotiv Moscow, marking him as the first foreign player from a distant country to play in the Russian Championship.

Despite scoring six goals in 21 appearances, KHALIFEH faced challenges such as insufficient living conditions and broken promises from Zhemchuzhina. As a result, he terminated his contract at the end of the season and returned to Syria. Nevertheless, his performance in Russia earned him the accolade of Rookie of the Year by the renowned Russian newspaper "Sport-Express."

Success in Lebanon and Return to Zhemchuzhina

KHALIFEH spent the next three seasons playing for the Lebanese club Nejmeh, where he became the league's top scorer in 1996. In 1998, he made a brief return to Zhemchuzhina, making one appearance for the main team and scoring five goals in six matches for the reserve squad.

Later Career and Coaching

KHALIFEH retired from professional football in 2000 after a stint with Al-Wahda in Damascus. Following his retirement, he transitioned into coaching, managing several clubs in Syria and Jordan. He made a significant impact on the development of young players and the overall success of the teams he led.
