Princess Augusta Caroline of Reuss-Ebersdorf
Early Life and EducationBorn on May 19, 1757, as the second child of Heinrich XXIV, Count of Reuss-Ebersdorf, and Karoline Ernestine of Erbach-Schönberg, Augusta Caroline was renowned for her exceptional beauty. To showcase her daughter's charm, her father commissioned a portrait by Johann Heinrich Tischbein, depicting her as the mythological figure Artemisia. The painting was prominently displayed at the Reichstag in Regensburg, attracting the attention of potential suitors.
Marriage to Franz Friedrich Anton
On June 13, 1777, Augusta Caroline married Franz Friedrich Anton, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. The Duke had previously purchased the Tischbein portrait for a substantial sum. The couple's marriage was a successful union, resulting in a large family and many influential offspring.
Visit to Saint Petersburg
In 1795, Augusta Caroline accompanied her three eldest daughters to Saint Petersburg. Empress Catherine II was seeking a bride for her grandson, Constantine Pavlovich. While none of Augusta Caroline's daughters were chosen, her visit established diplomatic relations and foreshadowed future royal connections.
Reign and Legacy
Augusta Caroline was a devoted mother who supported her children's ambitions. After her son, Leopold, was elected the first King of the Belgians in 1831, she lived to see his coronation before passing away from a severe cold on November 16, 1831, at the age of 74.
