Early Life and Education
Augustin Pyrame de Candolle, a Swiss and French botanist, was born in Geneva in 1778. Inspired by Jean-Pierre Vaucher's botanical lectures, he pursued studies in Paris under the guidance of Antoine-Laurent de Jussieu.
Botanical Contributions
Candolle's significant contributions to botany include:- Astragalogia (1802):A detailed description of the genus Astragalus with 50 illustrated plates.
- Plantarum historia succulentarum (1799-1829):A four-volume work on succulent plants featuring 185 illustrated plates.
- Les Liliacées peintes par Redouté (1802-1808):A collaboration with renowned artist Pierre-Joseph Redouté, presenting 240 illustrated plates of lilies.
Medical and Academic Career
Candolle obtained a doctorate in medicine in 1804. In 1806, he became a professor of medicine at the University of Montpellier and director of its Botanical Garden. In 1810, he established the Chair of Botany within the faculty of sciences.
Natural System of Classification
Candolle's "Elementary Theory of Botany" (1813) outlined his pioneering natural system of plant classification. This system divided plants into vascular and cellular groups, with vascular plants being further classified into dicotyledons and monocotyledons.
Return to Geneva and Later Life
In 1814, Candolle returned to Geneva, restoring the Botanical Garden and founding the Conservatoire Botanique. In 1816, he accepted the position of professor of natural history at the University of Geneva. Throughout his life, he actively participated in scientific societies and played a leading role in advancing botanical knowledge.
Recognition and Legacy
Candolle's name is associated with the authorship or co-authorship of over 16,605 plant names. He was a member of prestigious scientific academies in France, London, and Saint Petersburg. Candolle's exceptional contributions to botany earned him the reputation of "the Kepler of botany," as coined by Andrei Nikolaevich Beketov.
