Rabbi Shmuley Boteach

Rabbi Shmuley Boteach is an American rabbi, author, and lecturer. He is known for his work in contemporary Orthodoxy, his advocacy for social justice, and his activism on behalf of the Jewish people.

Early Life and Education

Rabbi Boteach was born in 1966 in New York City. He received his rabbinical ordination from Yeshiva University and earned a doctorate in philosophy from Oxford University.

Rabbinical and Educational Career

Rabbi Boteach is the senior rabbi of The Jewish Institute of Riverdale in the Bronx, New York. He is also a professor at Stern College for Women at Yeshiva University and the founder of the Yeshivat Chovevei Torah. Additionally, Rabbi Boteach serves as the president of the Coalition of Concerned Jewish Americans (Amcha).

Social Activism

Rabbi Boteach has been involved in numerous social justice initiatives. He played a leading role in the campaign to free Soviet Jewry and later opposed the establishment of a monastery on the site of a former Nazi chemical weapons storage facility. He has also traveled to Poland to protest attempts to minimize the Holocaust by Polish authorities and Catholic groups.
