Saint Abraamius of the Kiev-Pechersk Monastery
Life and LegacyAbraamius was a monk and presbyter of the Kiev-Pechersk Monastery, venerated by the Russian Orthodox Church as a saint. His memory is celebrated on September 28 (Feast of the Venerable Fathers of the Near Caves of Kiev-Pechersk) and October 29.
Unfortunately, there are no surviving records of Abraamius' life. Researchers speculate that he lived in the second third of the 13th century to the beginning of the 14th century, based on the fact that detailed biographical information exists for Kiev-Pechersk saints from the pre-Mongol period.
Relics and Veneration
Abraamius' relics are located in the Near Caves (Antoniev Caves) of the Kiev-Pechersk Monastery, situated between the relics of the martyr Anastasius and 12 venerable Greek artisans. His local veneration began under Metropolitan Peter Mogila, who established the celebration of the Assembly of the Venerable Fathers of the Near and Far Caves in 1643.
From the late 17th century onwards, Abraamius' name was included among the saints of "the city of Kiev." His general church veneration began in the second half of the 18th century after the Holy Synod's permission to include the names of several Kiev saints in the general church calendar.
