Life and Early Influences

Azizulhasni Awang, Malaysia's renowned professional track cyclist, was born on January 5, 1988. As the eighth and penultimate child in a large family, he witnessed his older brother's cycling pursuits, which kindled his own passion for the sport. Embracing this passion, Awang transitioned to the esteemed National Sports School on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur.

Early Successes and International Recognition

Awang's talent blossomed at the Asian Championships, where he reigned supreme as a five-time champion between 2007 and 2009. His first Olympic appearance occurred at the 2008 Beijing Games, although he did not achieve significant success. Breakthrough came at the 2009 World Championships in Pruszków, Poland, where Awang earned a silver medal in the sprint.

Asian Champion and World Medalist

Awang's success continued in 2010 when he claimed the Asian Games gold in keirin. He also secured bronze in the team sprint at the Commonwealth Games and added a silver medal in the keirin at the World Championships in Ballerup, Denmark, narrowly losing to cycling legend Chris Hoy.

Injury and Comeback

Awang faced a significant setback in February 2011 when he crashed during a World Cup event in Manchester. A 20-centimeter wood splinter from the track pierced his leg, necessitating extensive recovery and rehabilitation. Despite the injury, he participated in the 2012 London Olympics.

Awang's competitive spirit resurfaced at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where he won bronze in the keirin. His return to international podiums gained momentum at the 2015 World Championships in Yvelines, where he secured another bronze in keirin.

Olympic Glory and Historic Achievement

In 2016, Awang's career soared to new heights. He captured a third place finish in keirin at the World Championships in London. The pinnacle of his career arrived at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, where he showcased his dominance in the keirin. Awang earned an Olympic bronze, trailing only six-time Olympic champion Jason Kenny of Great Britain and Matthijs Büchli of the Netherlands. This historic achievement marked a major milestone for Malaysian cycling.

Personal Life and Legacy

Azizulhasni Awang married Athiah Ilyana bt Abd Samat on January 30, 2010. He remains an inspirational figure in Malaysian sports, embodying determination, resilience, and the pursuit of excellence.
