Biography of B.R. Shetty

B.R. Shetty is an Indian pharmacist and entrepreneur, best known as the founder and CEO of 'New Medical Centre' (NMC Health) and 'UAE Exchange' in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Born in 1942 in the small town of Kaup in the Udupi district of Karnataka, India, Shetty's parents were from the prominent Bavaguthu clan, known as one of the largest landowners in the region.

Early Life and Education

Shetty received his school education in India and is a qualified pharmacist. He is married to Chandra Kumari Shetty, and they have three daughters and a son. Currently, he resides in Dubai.

Entrepreneurial Journey

Shetty arrived in the UAE in 1973 and recognized the unlimited business opportunities in the healthcare sector. As an experienced pharmacist, he acquired the National Hospital in Abu Dhabi as his first business venture. Today, Shetty's company owns hospitals and clinics throughout the UAE, serving over a million patients annually. In addition to healthcare, the 'NMC Group' has diversified interests in financial services, pharmaceutical trading, education, and advertising.

Philanthropy and Achievements

B.R. Shetty is not only a successful businessman but also a renowned philanthropist. He has invested in a medical institution in the northern part of Uttaranchal, India and is the founder and patron of the Indian Pharmaceutical Association in the Emirates. Shetty serves on the Advisory Council (financial sector) of the Dubai Government's Economic Department and the Pharmaceutical Committee in Dubai. He is also the Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Indian School.

In recognition of his contributions to trade and industry, Shetty was awarded the 'Pravasi Bharatiya Samman', a prestigious Indian state honor, in 2007. In 2009, he received the 'Padmashri' order, one of India's highest civilian awards, from the President of India.
