Early Life and Education

Born in Shymkent, Kazakhstan, on August 2, 1950, Kenzheev spent his early years in Moscow. His father taught English, while his mother worked as a librarian. Kenzheev received his higher education from the Chemistry Department of Moscow State University.

Literary Debut and Moscow Circle

In 1977, Kenzheev made his literary debut with poems published in the collective anthology "Lenin Hills: Poems by MSU Poets." He also published in various literary magazines. In the early 1970s, he co-founded the poetry group "Moscow Time."

Exiled to Canada and Activism

In 1982, Kenzheev immigrated to Canada. While in exile, he supported the "Zheltoksan" movement in Kazakhstan by reading poems by Bolat Kanapyanov on "Radio Liberty." He also became a member of the Russian PEN Club.
