Early Life and Career
Harris began her acting career in Chicago theater as a teenager. There, she met her husband, director Paul Sills, who played a pivotal role in her Broadway debut in 1961. Her early performances earned her two Tony Award nominations.

In 1967, Harris's portrayal in the musical "The Apple Tree" culminated in her Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. This recognition cemented her status as a Broadway star.
Film Debut and Critical Acclaim
Harris made her film debut in 1965 with "The Thousand Clowns," for which she received a Golden Globe nomination. She subsequently received three more Golden Globe nominations for her roles in "Nashville" (1975), "Family Plot" (1976), and "Freaky Friday" (1976).
