Biography of Bernice Claire

Bernice Claire, whose real name was Bernice Jahnigan, was an American singer and actress born in 1907 in Oakland, California. She displayed vocal talent from a young age, which she developed under the guidance of her remarkable teacher, Alice Eggers, at Castlemont High School. By the time she finished school, Claire possessed a pure coloratura voice and began pursuing opportunities in opera.

A Chance Encounter and a Contract

During this period, Claire had the fortunate opportunity to meet the renowned singer Alexander Gray. Together, Claire and Gray embarked on a tour across the country. In 1930, they signed a contract with Warner Bros. This talented duo shone brightly that year, appearing in several musical films such as "No, No, Nanette" and "Spring Is Here," where Claire sang her famous "With a Song in My Heart." Their final collaboration in the same year was the musical "The Song of the Flame."

A Promising Career

During the 1930s, Claire was immensely popular. She appeared on theater billboards as a spirited brunette with an incredibly endearing and sincere face. Standing at a height of 1.59 meters, she did not possess the typical anemic appearance that was considered fashionable at the time. However, as the genre lost its popularity towards the end of the 1930s, and the audience's interest waned, the company chose not to renew Claire's contract. Her brilliantly started film career came to an end, albeit as bright as it was short.

A Shift in Direction

Nevertheless, Claire continued to sing, transitioning from movie studios to radio stations and theater stages, including Broadway. Interestingly, she later had multiple performances alongside Alexander Gray, with whom she had made her debut. Claire stopped performing after the death of her first husband and remained in the shadows even after her second marriage. She did not have any children.

Legacy

Bernice Claire lived to the age of 95 and passed away on January 17, 2003, in Portland, Oregon. Despite her relatively short film career, her talent as a singer and actress left a lasting impact on the entertainment industry.
