Bartolomeo Vivarini
Bartolomeo Vivarini was an Italian painter and sculptor born in Murano.
Early Career
During the first half of the 1450s, Vivarini primarily collaborated with his older brother, Antonio. Their most notable work from this period is "Glory of Saint Peter," painted for the Church of San Francesco in Padua.
Madonna Paintings
In subsequent years, Vivarini became known for his depictions of the Virgin Mary. Among the most renowned is "Madonna Enthroned" (1465), which graces the cathedral in Bari.
Later Works
Vivarini's final known dated work is "Saint Barbara" (1490). While most of his creations were executed in tempera, he was also one of the first Italian artists to employ oil paints. He is believed to have learned the technique from Antonello da Messina in 1473.
