Infancy and Royal Lineage
Beatriz, the Portuguese Infanta, was born on December 31, 1504, in Lisbon, as the third child of King Manuel I of Portugal and his second wife, Maria of Aragon. As a member of the House of Aviz, she was closely related to Portuguese royalty; her brothers, João III and Henrique, would later reign as kings of Portugal, while her sister, Isabella, would marry Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor.
Marriage and Family
On September 29, 1521, at the age of 16, Beatriz married Charles III, Duke of Savoy, in Villefranche. Charles was 34 years old at the time. The couple went on to have nine children:
Adrian (1522-1523)
Louis (1523-1536)Emmanuel Philibert (1528-1580)
Catherine (1529-1536)
Maria (1530-1531)
Isabella (1532-1533)
Emmanuel (1533)
Emmanuel (1534)
John (1537-1538)
Sadly, eight of these children died in infancy or early childhood, leaving only Emmanuel Philibert to reach adulthood. He would inherit his father's throne as Duke of Savoy upon Charles' death in 1553.
