I. M. Pei: A Trailblazing Architect
I. M. Pei, a Chinese-American architect, is renowned as one of the pioneers of the Pritzker Prize, a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, and a Royal Gold Medal recipient from the Royal Institute of British Architects.
Early Life and Inspiration
Born in Guangzhou and raised in Hong Kong, Pei drew inspiration from the classical gardens of Suzhou at a young age. In 1935, he relocated to the United States to pursue architectural studies at the University of Pennsylvania School of Architecture but swiftly transferred to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Dissatisfied with the Beaux-Arts emphasis in both institutions, he self-studied the works of avant-garde architects, notably Le Corbusier.
Academic Journey and Bauhaus Influence
After graduating from MIT, Pei enrolled at Harvard's Graduate School of Design, where he encountered Bauhaus architects Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer. Their influence significantly shaped his design philosophy.
Professional Career
In 1948, Pei was hired by New York developer William Zeckendorf, with whom he collaborated for seven years before establishing his own firm, I. M. Pei & Associates, in 1955. The firm subsequently evolved into I. M. Pei & Partners in 1966 and Pei Cobb Freed & Partners in 1989. Following his retirement as an architect in 1990, Pei continued to work as an architectural adviser, primarily with his sons' firm, Pei Partnership Architects.
Contribution to International Style
Pei carried forward the legacy of Mies van der Rohe's International Style, emphasizing clean lines, geometric forms, and integration with the surrounding environment.
