1908 London Olympics
At the 1908 London Olympics, Lázár-Torres showcased his prowess in two disciplines. He anchored Hungary's 4×200-meter freestyle relay team to a silver medal, establishing himself as a rising star in the sport. Although he failed to advance past the semifinals in the individual 400-meter freestyle, his performance hinted at greater achievements to come.
1912 Stockholm Olympics
Four years later, at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, Lázár-Torres expanded his repertoire to include three events. He helped Hungary reach the final of the 4×200-meter freestyle relay, but the team ultimately withdrew before the race. In the individual 400-meter and 1500-meter freestyle events, he placed fifth and failed to finish in the final, respectively.
World Record Holder
Despite his Olympic results in Stockholm, Lázár-Torres continued to excel. In the lead-up to the Games, he shattered the world record in the 400-meter freestyle, solidifying his status as one of the fastest swimmers of his era.
Wartime Heroism and Legacy
Lázár-Torres served in the Austro-Hungarian Army during World War I. Tragically, he lost his life in Italy in 1918. His premature demise at the age of 28 cut short a promising swimming career and left a lasting void in the Hungarian and international swimming communities.
