Ben Goldscheider, a young British horn player, has defied the odds by pursuing his passion for music despite battling an incurable lung disease.
Diagnosis and Early Challenges
At age six, Goldscheider was diagnosed with bronchiectasis, an irreversible condition in which the airways are abnormally widened, damaged, and inflamed. This disease can lead to mucus buildup and infections.
Music as a Remedy
To aid Goldscheider's breathing, his parents suggested he play a wind instrument. They chose the horn, a challenging instrument that requires exceptional lung capacity and breath control.
Embracing the Horn
Despite initial challenges caused by his bronchiectasis, Goldscheider found that playing the horn improved his breathing. With support from his teacher, he developed techniques to overcome limitations.
A Promising Career
Goldscheider's talent and dedication paid off. At age 11, he won a place at the Royal College of Music's Saturday School. Eventually, he decided to focus solely on the horn, sacrificing his athletic pursuits.
