Benjamin McKenzie Schenkkan, known simply as Benjamin McKenzie, is an American actor and producer. He was born on September 12, 1978, in Austin, Texas, to acclaimed poet Mary Frances Victory and Peter Mida Schenkkan. His uncle is renowned playwright Robert Schenkkan, and he is also the cousin of actress Sarah Drew.
To avoid confusion with another actor named Ben Schenkkan who was already a member of the Screen Actors Guild, Benjamin changed his last name. He attended Austin High School, where he played wide receiver and defensive back on the school's football team. He then went on to attend the University of Virginia from 1997 to 2001, earning a degree in economics.
McKenzie began his acting career while in college and, after graduating, he moved to Los Angeles with the intention of pursuing acting full-time. Prior to his breakthrough role in "The O.C.", McKenzie appeared in New York stage productions such as "Life is a Dream," "Street Scene," and "The Blue Bird," which were showcased at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. He also made appearances in TV series such as "The District," "Judge Advocate General," and "Mad TV."
In August 2003, after the successful premiere of "The O.C.", McKenzie woke up to find himself famous. His portrayal of Ryan Atwood on the hit teen drama series earned him widespread love from young audiences and numerous Teen Choice Award nominations. His popularity led to features in magazines like "People," "In Touch Weekly," and "Us Weekly," and he was even named one of the 100 sexiest men, ranking at number 5. "InStyle" recognized McKenzie as one of the 10 hottest bachelors of 2005.
As the popularity of "The O.C." declined in July 2005, McKenzie experienced another career boost in 2008 with his role as Joe Bonham in the film adaptation of Dalton Trumbo's 1939 novel "Johnny Got His Gun." His performance received critical acclaim. Currently, McKenzie stars as young police officer Ben Sherman in the drama series "Southland," which premiered in April 2009.
Despite his success, McKenzie avoids frequent public appearances and instead focuses on his passion for football and raising his pitbull, Oscar.
