Early Life and Arrival in Prussia

Born into a noble family in the village of Freiberg, Germany, where his father served as a bailiff, Berlewin joined the ranks of the Teutonic Order and embarked on a journey to Prussia in 1233.

Initial Missions in Prussia

Upon his arrival in Prussia, Berlewin quickly rose through the ranks, serving as a provisioner in the Treaty of Chełmno (1233) and later participating in missions in Kulmland (1234).

Castle Balga's Foundation

In 1238, Berlewin's leadership reached a critical juncture when he ordered the dispatch of two ships, "Pilgrim" and "Friedland," from Elbing to search for a strategic location in Natangia for the construction of an орденской fortress. The ships eventually landed at a site that became known as the German castle of Balga in 1239.

Vice Landmaster and Marshal of the Teutonic Order

During his time in Prussia, Berlewin held significant positions of authority. In 1239, he was appointed Vice Landmaster, representing the interests of Grand Master Hermann von Balck. Three years later, he ascended to the role of Marshal of the Teutonic Order (1242-1243).

Death in Battle

Berlewin's promising career was tragically cut short in 1243 when he fell valiantly in the Battle of Lake Renzden against the forces of Pomeranian Duke Świętopełk II. His sacrifice marked a significant loss for the Teutonic Order in its early years of conquest and establishment in Prussia.
