Early Life and Education

Born into a wine merchant family in Rotterdam on December 27, 1887, Van Dieren initially aspired to become a scientist. With an exceptional memory, he delved into intellectual pursuits. Despite lacking formal training, he became proficient in violin and composition.

Musical Career in London

In 1909, accompanied by his pianist friend Frieda Kindler, he relocated to London. They married in 1910 and had a son. From 1911 to 1912, Van Dieren visited Berlin as a music correspondent, establishing connections with Arnold Schoenberg and Ferruccio Busoni.

Progressive Illness and Support

In 1912, Van Dieren developed a debilitating kidney disease. During periods of intense pain, he relied on morphine. His unique personality, music, and critical essays were highly valued within a close London circle that included artists, writers, and musicians.

Compositions and Publications

Throughout the 1920s, Van Dieren's works began to be published. His Fourth String Quartet premiered at the 1927 Frankfurt Festival. BBC broadcasts featured his "Diaphony" in 1934 and his "Chinese Symphony" in 1935.

Van Dieren's compositions span a wide range, including an opera, two symphonies, six string quartets, sonatas for violin and cello, piano and choral works, and songs with texts by renowned poets such as Goethe, Heine, Hugo, and Joyce.
