Biography of Bernard Sumner (Albrecht)
Bernard Sumner, born on January 4, 1956, in Salford near Manchester, is an English rock guitarist and musician. He is best known as the leader of the rock band New Order, which was formed by former members of Joy Division. In Joy Division, Sumner played guitar and keyboards and co-wrote the group's music.
Early Years and Formation of Joy Division
In July 1976, Sumner attended a Sex Pistols concert in Manchester, which inspired him to pursue music. He bought a guitar and shared his aspirations with his school friend, Peter Hook. Later that year, Ian Curtis joined them, and they decided to form a band, initially called Warsaw and later renamed Joy Division.
New Order and Transition to Frontman
After Curtis tragically took his own life in 1980, the remaining members of Joy Division decided to continue making music under the new name New Order. Sumner took on the role of lead vocalist and became the band's leader. However, he struggled to adapt to the frontman position, especially in comparison to Curtis. Sumner even had difficulty with his singing, taking vocal lessons to improve his voice. Although live performances were challenging, he achieved a satisfactory vocal sound in the studio.
Electronic and Collaborations
In 1987, Sumner teamed up with Johnny Marr from The Smiths to form the project Electronic. They wrote songs together outside of their respective bands, blending house and indie-rock music. According to Sumner, the project provided a creative outlet for both musicians, allowing them to create music without the constraints of their main groups' stylistic limitations.
Sumner also collaborated with various artists, especially after the success of New Order's electro single, "Blue Monday," in 1983. This achievement solidified his reputation in electronic music and led to his involvement with lesser-known indie collectives, including collaborations with the Chemical Brothers.
Hacienda and Film Adaptation
From 1982 to 1997, Sumner, along with other members of New Order, co-owned the Manchester disco club, Hacienda. The club's history, as well as Sumner's own story, was portrayed in the 2002 film "24 Hour Party People," with actor John Simm portraying Sumner's character.
