Early Life and Career
Bernhard Kohl was born in Austria and began his professional cycling career in 2006 with the T-Mobile team.
Professional Success
Kohl enjoyed success as a professional cyclist, particularly as a strong climber. In 2006, he won the Austrian National Road Championship. In 2007 and 2008, he rode for the Gerolsteiner team.
In 2008, Kohl achieved a major milestone by winning the "polka dot" jersey for Best Climber in the Tour de France. He also finished third overall in the race's general classification.
Doping Controversy
However, Kohl's career took a dramatic turn in October 2008 when French newspaper L'Equipe reported that his doping test from the Tour de France had come back positive for CERA. If confirmed, this would have disqualified Kohl from the race and handed his third-place finish to Denis Menchov. The overall winner, Carlos Sastre, would have also won the mountain classification.
Retirement and Legacy
In response to the doping scandal, Kohl retired from professional cycling on May 25, 2009. His legacy remains tainted by the allegations of doping, but his achievements as a climber are still recognized.
