Early Life and Career

Bertrand Gachot, known as "Mister Europe," was a Belgian-born racing driver of French and German descent. Raised in Luxembourg, he held a Belgian racing license and proudly displayed the European Community flag on his helmet.

Formula Ford and Formula 3

Gachot's racing career began in karting at age 15. He graduated to Formula Ford 1600 in Britain, winning the championship in 1985. In 1986, he triumphed in the British Formula Ford 2000. The following year, he entered British Formula 3, finishing second in the championship with West Surrey Racing Team.

Formula 3000 and Formula 1 Debut

Gachot advanced to Formula 3000 in 1988 but achieved limited success. In 1989, he made his Formula 1 debut with the Onyx team, initially impressing with his results. However, negative press coverage led to a falling out with the team boss, and Gachot lost his seat later that year.

Coloni, Jordan, and Imprisonment

In 1990, Gachot joined the Coloni team, becoming the only driver to race a Subaru-powered Formula 1 car. Despite a lackluster performance, he briefly drove for Jordan Grand Prix in 1991. Gachot's most memorable achievement came at the Canadian Grand Prix, where he finished 5th. However, his career took a dramatic turn in August 1991 when he was imprisoned for spraying a taxi driver with pepper spray.

Return to Formula 1 with Larrousse

After spending time behind bars, Gachot was allowed to return to racing. He joined the Larrousse team for the 1991 Australian Grand Prix and remained with them for 1992. Despite earning one point in Monaco, his results were largely disappointing.

Pacific and CART

In 1994, Gachot became part-owner of the struggling Pacific team. Neither he nor his teammate finished a race that season. In 1995, he returned to CART but failed to make a significant impact.

24 Hours of Le Mans and Business Ventures

During his racing career, Gachot also achieved success in endurance racing. He won the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1991 with Mazda, marking the only Japanese victory in the event's history.

After retiring from racing, Gachot founded Hype Energy Drinks. He currently manages one of Europe's leading websites dedicated to motorsport.
