Galeotti was born as Joy Lenz in Hollywood, Florida. She was the only child of a history teacher and therapist, Robert Lenz, and a personnel manager, Katie Lenz. Her first solo performance took place at the age of three in front of a crowd of three hundred people at Carpenter's Church in Lakeland, Florida. At the age of four, Galeotti's family moved to Arlington, Texas, where she developed a serious interest in performing. It all began with a twenty-minute play called "High Hopes" and "Heavy Sweatshirts" performed for a small audience at the Dallas Museum. Bethany's first major role came at the age of seven when she played Zeke in a local production of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." Three years later, Lenz portrayed Scout in a production of "To Kill a Mockingbird" at the Irving Theater.

After a class trip to Los Angeles, Bethany landed her first real job in a commercial for the teen series "Swan Crossing." She went on to perform in plays such as "Annie," "Cinderella," and "Gypsy: A Musical Fable." When she was thirteen, her family relocated once again, this time to New Jersey. Bethany began attending auditions and soon accumulated a collection of commercial roles, including ones for "Eggo" waffles and "Dr. Pepper" soda. It was at this point that she caught the attention of more serious agencies, marking the beginning of Bethany Joy Galeotti's professional success.
