Political Career
- Fernández de la Vega began her political career in 1979 when she joined the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE).
- In 1986, she was elected to the Congress of Deputies, where she served until 1996.
- She held various ministerial positions in the governments of Felipe González and José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, including Minister of Justice (1988-1993) and Minister of the Presidency (1994-1996).
Deputy Prime Minister of Spain
- In 2004, Fernández de la Vega was appointed Deputy Prime Minister of Spain under Zapatero.
- She held this position until 2010, becoming the first woman to hold the office.
- During her tenure, she oversaw the implementation of several major social and economic reforms, including the Law on Equal Marriage and the Law on Gender Violence.
Later Career
- After leaving government, Fernández de la Vega worked as a professor of constitutional law at the Carlos III University of Madrid and a visiting professor at Georgetown University.
- She also served as President of the UN Development Group from 2012 to 2014.
- In 2014, she was appointed Commissioner for the Verification of the Implementation of Justice Reforms in Spain by the Spanish Parliament.
