Biography of Billy the Kid
Billy the Kid, also known by the aliases Henry Antrim and William Harrison Bonney, was a notorious Wild West outlaw. He was born in New York and committed his first murder at the age of twelve. Although he is believed to have killed twenty-one people, the actual number is closer to nine (four of which he killed himself and five with the help of others).
Billy the Kid was short and agile, with blue eyes, smooth cheeks, and protruding front teeth. Many newspaper reporters described him as "charming and pleasant". He was also sociable and humorous, but these qualities were hidden beneath his tough character and determined nature. Combined with excellent firearm skills and almost animal-like instinct, he became a dangerous criminal. His most notable attribute was his sombrero hat with a wide green decorative ribbon. He was also a talented musician.
Legendary Status
Although Billy the Kid was not widely known during his lifetime, he turned into a legend a year after his death when his killer, Sheriff Pat Garrett, published a sensational biography of the criminal titled "The True Life of Billy the Kid". Thanks to Garrett's influence, Billy the Kid became one of the symbols of the Wild West. In December 2010, the administration of the governor of New Mexico planned to consider the possibility of posthumously pardoning Billy the Kid. This decision was based on a rumored deal between Kid and the then-head of the state, Lew Wallace: Wallace promised to grant Billy the Kid forgiveness in exchange for his confession in at least three murders, although Wallace formally did not fulfill his part of the agreement.
The office of the current governor of the state, Bill Richardson, provided the residents of New Mexico with the opportunity to express their own opinions on the possibility of posthumously pardoning the famous criminal until December 26, 2010.
