Early Life and Education
Bishop Herman of Alma-Ata was born into a privileged family. His father was a hereditary honorary citizen, and his mother came from a Moscow merchant family. In 1912, he graduated from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics at St. Petersburg University. That same year, he entered the St. Petersburg Theological Academy.
Monastic and Ecclesiastical Career
In 1913, Herman was tonsured as a monk and ordained as a hierodeacon. In 1914, he became a hieromonk. In 1916, he graduated from the Petrograd Theological Academy. From 1916 to 1917, he taught at the Zhitomir Pastoral School named after John of Kronstadt.
Episcopal Ordination and Ministry
On October 19, 1926, Herman was consecrated as Bishop of Masalsk, vicar of the Kaluga Diocese. In 1929, he became Bishop of Bugulma, vicar of the Kazan Diocese. On April 3, 1930, he became Bishop of Alma-Ata.
Pastoral Work and Critical Views
Bishop Herman was a vocal critic of the Renovationist movement. He provided moral and material support to exiles, including priests, and allowed them to receive communion in the altar in full vestments during the Liturgy. In Alma-Ata, he collaborated with intellectuals, including in collecting historical information about the relics of the Apostle and Evangelist Matthew, which were said to be located near the city. Bishop Herman also had an interest in astronomy.
Imprisonment and Death
On December 10, 1932, Bishop Herman was arrested in Alma-Ata. He was accused of participating in a counter-revolutionary organization of clerics. In 1933, he was sentenced to 8 years of imprisonment and sent to the Karlag. In 1937, he was recognized as an invalid, but in 1938, he was sentenced again, this time to 10 years, for allegedly making statements that "discredited Soviet construction and insulted the leaders of the party." Bishop Herman passed away on May 24, 1942, in the hospital of the Akmola detachment of the Karlag from a heart attack.
