Biography of Bobby Darin
Bobby Darin, an American singer and actor of Italian descent, was born in the Bronx, New York. His real name was Walden Robert Cassotto. Despite facing three more failures, he finally achieved success with his song "Splish Splash," which he composed in just twelve minutes. The song became an anthem for teenagers and reached the 3rd position on the charts in August 1958.
Early Life and Career
Bobby Darin lost both of his parents at an early age. After completing high school, he briefly attended Hunter College in Manhattan but dropped out to pursue a career in show business. He met music publisher Don Kirshner, and began writing songs for Aldon Music. He later signed a contract with Decca and adopted the stage name Bobby Darin, allegedly chosen at random from a telephone directory.
Musical Success and Film Career
After his initial failures, Bobby Darin found breakthrough success with "Splish Splash." He then achieved further success with his song "Mack The Knife," which topped the American charts and reached the number one spot in the UK. He won two Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Male Vocal for his performance of "Mack The Knife." In 1960, he ventured into Hollywood and appeared in several films, including "Heller In Pink Tights" (1960), "Come September" (1961), and "Captain Newman MD" (1963), for which he won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
Political Involvement and Personal Life
In 1968, Bobby Darin actively participated in the electoral campaign of his friend and admirer Robert Kennedy. However, Kennedy's assassination deeply affected Darin, and he secluded himself for almost a year, living in a van somewhere in Southern California. Darin reappeared in Las Vegas, underwent heart surgery, and in January 1973, he began hosting his own television show. He married his secretary, Andrea Joy Yeager, in 1973. His first marriage to actress Sandra Dee had ended in divorce in 1967. Darin continued to pursue his acting career and released his film "Happy Mother's Day" in May 1973. However, on December 20 of the same year, while undergoing a heart valve replacement surgery in Los Angeles, Darin passed away without regaining consciousness.
