Ukrainian Literary Figure and Nationalist Activist
Early Life and Education:Born in Ukraine, this literary figure joined the Ukrainian scout organization Plast in his youth and served on its governing council. Inspired by Ukrainian nationalism, he became an active member of various Ukrainian organizations, including the Ukrainian Military Organization (UVO) and the Union of Ukrainian Nationalist Youth.
Political Activism:
In 1928-1929, he led the Union of Ukrainian Nationalist Youth and served as the first regional leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) from 1929 to 1930. His political activities led to his arrest and three years of imprisonment.
Literary Career:
Concurrently with his political activism, he was a prominent member of the literary group Lystopad. Throughout the 1930s, he edited and published several nationalist and literary journals, including "Visti," "Holos," and "Daizhboh." He also translated works by renowned poet Rainer Maria Rilke.
Emigration to the US:
In 1940, he began editing magazines for Ukrainians who had been forcibly relocated to Germany. After World War II, he emigrated to the United States in 1949, where he continued his literary pursuits.
Poetic and Editorial Work:
In the United States, he published several collections of poetry while also working as an editor. His writings contributed to the preservation and dissemination of Ukrainian literature abroad.
