Biography of Boris Gelfand

Boris Gelfand is a Belarusian chess grandmaster who began playing chess at the age of 6. He earned the title of Soviet Sports Master in 1984, International Chess Master in 1987, and International Grandmaster in 1989. Gelfand has achieved numerous victories in international tournaments, including Debrecen (1989), Mallorca (Qualification for the World Chess Championship 1989), Manila (Interzonal 1990), Belgrade (1991, 1995), Alekhine Memorial (1992), Manila (Interzonal 1993), Halkidiki (1993), Dos Hermanas (1994), Vienna (1996), Tilburg (1996), Rubinstein Memorial (1998, 2000), Monaco (2001, 2002), and Cannes (2002). In 1998, he repatriated to Israel.

Early Career and Rise to Prominence

Boris Gelfand is considered one of the brightest representatives of modern chess, who emerged in the era of Garry Kasparov (some even argue that he emerged in the era of Bobby Fischer). After winning the USSR Youth Championship, Gelfand was regarded as one of the greatest hopes for the leading chess nation. He then achieved success in various international youth competitions, winning the European Championship in 1987-88. His transition to adult chess went smoothly, impressing not only with his high results but also with his playing style. As one of the participants in the qualification tournament in Klaipeda (1988) remarked, "he doesn't seem to look at the board, yet he looks around or wanders, and then makes the strongest move." This style of play is characteristic of many strong grandmasters.

Since his successful performance in Linares in 1990, Gelfand firmly established himself in the world elite. Over the past ten years, he has played in candidate matches and won major tournaments. Gelfand's strongest aspect is his opening repertoire, following in the footsteps of classical traditions set by Botvinnik, Geller, and Kasparov. There are very few chess players capable of generating quality opening ideas in modern chess, and Gelfand undoubtedly belongs to this group. With such a powerful advantage, a high-class chess player like him cannot remain in the shadows for long.

Recent Career and Contributions

After a relative decline, Gelfand is once again on the rise, as evidenced by his recent performances in tournaments. He has also published numerous chess articles in various magazines, and his first book, a collection of selected games, will be released in the near future.
