Early Life and Education

Boris Petrovich Nikolsky was born on October 14, 1900, in Menzelinsk, Ufa Governorate (now Tatarstan). In 1925, he graduated from Leningrad State University and remained there as a researcher.

Academic Career

Following his expulsion from Leningrad, Nikolsky established and headed the Department of Colloid Chemistry at Saratov State University (1935-1939). In 1939, he returned to Leningrad and resumed his work at Leningrad State University's Faculty of Chemistry, where he became a professor and head of the Department of Physical Chemistry. Nikolsky held this position for nearly five decades, until 1988. He also served as Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry from 1961 to 1963.

Work at the Radium Institute

From 1946 onward, Nikolsky worked at the Radium Institute, heading a laboratory from 1949 and the institute's Chemical Department from 1953 to 1973. He played a significant role in the development of the first plutonium plant and chaired the Scientific Council of the Mayak chemical plant from 1954 to 1974.

Recognition and Honors

Nikolsky's contributions were recognized with numerous awards. He was elected as a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1953 and a full member in 1968. Nikolsky received the Stalin Prize (1949), Lenin Prize (1961), USSR State Prize (1973), and V.G. Khlopin Prize (1980).

Scientific Contributions

Nikolsky's research focused on ion exchange processes between aqueous solutions and various solids, including ion exchange materials. His ion exchange theory of the glass electrode was groundbreaking and is widely used in ion exchange chromatography. Nikolsky made significant contributions to the development of plutonium production technology, implementing the all-acetate scheme (1957) and advancing sorption refining methods.

Legacy

Boris Petrovich Nikolsky passed away on January 4, 1990, at the age of eighty-nine. His work in physical chemistry and radiochemistry continues to inspire and inform researchers in these fields today.
