Early Life and Education

Born in Leningrad, Alexander B. Ioffe began violin lessons at the tender age of eight, followed by composition lessons at the age of 10. After completing his violin studies at the Leningrad Conservatory, he immigrated to Israel in 1990. In 1995, he graduated with honors from the Tel Aviv Music Academy in composition. Subsequently, in 1997, he became a student of Wolfgang Rihm in Karlsruhe, Germany, where he currently resides.

Musical Influences

Ioffe's musical inspirations include contemporary composers Galina Ustvolskaya and Morton Feldman. His works often incorporate influences from various literary sources, such as the writings of John Donne, R.M. Rilke, Robert Frost, Andrei Platonov, and Osip Mandelstam.

Compositions

Ioffe has composed a wide range of chamber and vocal pieces. Notable works include the operas "The Story of the Rabbi and His Son" (2003) and "Esther" (2006), based on Racine's tragedy "Esther." His "Book of Quartets" earned high praise from Wolfgang Rihm.

Performances and Collaborations

Ioffe's chamber works have been performed by renowned musicians such as Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Sol Gabetta, Konstantin Lifschitz (with whom he has also collaborated as a violist), the Hilliard Ensemble, and the Rosamunde Quartett.

Recognition and Awards

In 2000, Ioffe was awarded the prestigious Composition Prize of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts.
