Early Life and Chess Career
Slobodan Martinović, also referred to as Slobodan Martionovich, was born on February 22, 1945, in Montenegro. His passion for chess emerged at a young age, and he quickly established himself as a talented player.
National Champion
In 1973, Martinović secured his first title as the National Champion of Yugoslavia. This victory marked the beginning of his remarkable career, during which he went on to claim the title again in 1981 and share the top spot in 1983.
International Achievements
Martinović's reputation extended beyond Yugoslavia as he participated in numerous international tournaments. He placed fourth in the 1981 Zonal Tournament in Bečić, earning him a spot in the World Championship. He also secured victories in various tournaments, including those in Priština (1974), Bar (1977), Metz (1984 and 1985), Belgrade (1986), and Pula (1986 and 1987).
Olympic Appearances
Martinović represented Yugoslavia in the 1982 and 1984 Chess Olympiads, contributing to his country's success on the international stage.

In 1985, Martinović faced off against Mateja Matulović in a highly anticipated match. He emerged victorious, winning 4.5 to 3.5 (+2 −1 =5). This triumph further solidified his status as one of the leading chess players of his time.
