Biography of Brandon Boyd
Brandon Boyd is an American musician, vocalist, and songwriter, best known as the lead vocalist of the popular alternative rock band Incubus. He was born and raised in Calabasas, California, where his parents, who worked in the entertainment industry, nurtured his artistic talent from a young age. Brandon's younger brother, Jason Boyd, was also a vocalist in the band Audiovent, which had a short-lived career. Another musician in the family is his cousin Robert Boyd, known as BertoChico, a recognized guitarist and composer in the flamenco style.
Early Life and Musical Beginnings
In the 1980s, Brandon Boyd first met Jose Pasillas while they were both in elementary school. As they grew closer, Boyd was invited to join a band that already included Pasillas, Mike Einziger, and Alex Katunich. Boyd's vocal skills proved valuable to the group, as he had acquired them on his own, taking only two lessons before running out of money. As the band evolved, they began performing concerts and quickly gained popularity in their area.
The Birth of Incubus
Before their first performance at a friend's house, the band needed a name. Boyd suggested the name "Spiral Staircase," but they settled on a random word chosen by Einziger from the dictionary: Incubus, meaning "evil spirit" or "sex demon." The teenagers were intrigued by the sexual connotation found in the definition. Boyd also contributed to the band by creating their early flyers, which announced their performances. Initially, he copied some pictures from a sex education book given to the band by Einziger's mother, but the drawings caused confusion. Boyd also played the didgeridoo and djembe, an African drum, giving Incubus their alternative sound.
Commercial Success and Solo Career
In 1996, Incubus signed a contract with Sony's Epic/Immortal Records, a major record label. Their first two albums, "Fungus Amongus" and "S.C.I.E.N.C.E.," did not capture much public attention. However, their subsequent albums, "Make Yourself" and "Morning View," achieved significant commercial success. The album "A Crow Left of the Murder," released in 2004, and "Light Grenades" in 2006 continued their successful streak. In 2006, the band's lead single, "Anna-Molly," topped the charts in the contemporary rock genre.
Aside from his musical career, Brandon Boyd has authored two books. His first book, titled "White Fluffy Clouds: Finding Inspiration Moving Forward," was published in 2003 and mainly consisted of Boyd's artwork, photography, Incubus song lyrics, and written thoughts. His second book, "From the Murks of the Sultry Abyss," was released in 2007 by the same publisher, Endophasia.
Artistic Endeavors
In recent years, Brandon Boyd has dedicated himself to fine art, particularly painting. In September 2008, he organized his own exhibition called "Ectoplasm" at a gallery in Los Angeles.
