Early Life and Junior Career
Braydon Coburn began his hockey career with the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in 2000. He was drafted first overall by the Winterhawks and went on to win several individual trophies during his four seasons with the team. In his first season (2001-02), Coburn was named the WHL Rookie of the Year.
NHL Draft and Portland Winterhawks
In 2003, Coburn was drafted in the first round (8th overall) by the Atlanta Thrashers. He continued to excel with the Winterhawks, tying the WHL record for goals by a defenseman in a single game with four against the Seattle Thunderbirds on February 4, 2005.
International Play
While with Portland, Coburn represented Canada on the international stage. He won a silver medal at the 2004 World Junior Championships and a gold medal in 2005.
NHL Career
Coburn made his NHL debut with the Thrashers in the 2005-06 season. However, he struggled to establish himself in the league and spent most of his time in the minors. In 2007, he was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Alexei Zhitnik.
Rise to Prominence
In Philadelphia, Coburn flourished and became one of the Flyers' top defensemen. He signed a two-year contract extension in 2010 and a four-year, $18 million deal in 2011.
Tampa Bay Lightning
In 2015, Coburn was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning for Radko Gudas and draft picks. He has remained with the Lightning ever since, helping the team win the Stanley Cup in 2020.
Tampa Bay Lightning Contract Extension
In February 2016, Coburn extended his contract with the Lightning for three more years at a total value of $11.1 million.
